The Maldives is a collection of 26 atolls and over 1,000 islands in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sri Lanka. It’s one of the most geographically unique destinations on earth — and one of the few places where the overwater bungalow photograph actually matches reality.

From Australia, it’s a reasonable flight. From Sydney, it’s typically under 10 hours with a connection through Singapore or Colombo. Here’s how to choose where to stay.

How the Maldives Works

Each resort is on its own private island. There are no roads connecting them, no towns, and no leaving the island for dinner somewhere else. This means the resort you choose is your entire world for the duration of your stay — the food, the activities, the beach quality, and the atmosphere are entirely contained.

Most resorts include meals in the rate. Some are all-inclusive. The transfer from Malé airport to your resort is either by speedboat (20–60 minutes) or seaplane (15–45 minutes) — the latter is one of the best experiences in travel and often included for premium properties.

The Splurge Tier (From ~$2,000/night AUD)

Soneva Fust is consistently regarded as one of the finest resorts in the world. The villas are enormous, the food is exceptional (open-air restaurants, private dining on the sandbank), and the philosophy emphasises sustainability without sacrificing luxury. The house reef for snorkelling is excellent.

JOALI Maldives is newer, art-focused, and architecturally dramatic. The overwater villas have private pools and the service is personal in a way that larger resorts can’t match. Ideal for honeymooners and those who find large resorts impersonal.

Cheval Blanc Randheli (LVMH) delivers the fashion-house aesthetic to hospitality — clean lines, exceptional food, and the kind of attention to detail that justifies the rate.

The Better-Value Tier (~$800–1,400/night AUD)

Huvafen Fushi has some of the best diving in the Maldives and an excellent house reef. The underwater spa is genuinely unique. Not the most Instagram-friendly resort but technically one of the best.

Vakkaru Maldives delivers the full overwater villa experience at a more accessible price point than the top tier. Family-friendly without being child-centric. The all-inclusive package here is one of the better values in the Maldives.

OBLU NATURE Helengeli is a strong choice for divers — the North Malé Atoll location means excellent marine life access. Less polished than the top tier but significantly less expensive.

What’s Actually Included

Read the fine print before booking. Most Maldives resorts charge extra for:

All-inclusive packages significantly simplify this — but confirm what “all-inclusive” means because it varies.

Best Time to Visit from Australia

The Maldives has two seasons. The dry season (November to April) offers the best weather — calm seas, minimal rain, good visibility for diving. The wet season (May to October) sees more rain and rougher seas, but rates are 30–50% lower and the marine life (whale sharks, manta rays) can be exceptional.

December and January are peak season — book 6–12 months ahead for the best resorts.

The Honest Advice

Don’t choose a Maldives resort based on the overwater bungalow photographs — they all look the same from the air. Choose based on: what’s included in the rate, the house reef quality if you snorkel or dive, the transfer type (seaplane beats speedboat), and whether the food and service reviews are consistently strong across multiple recent seasons.

The best Maldives resort is the one where you never think about the price once you’re there.
